staring at our sun (embossed moon edition)
NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) photographs our Sun ~every 15 minutes, every day of the year. billy ocallaghan of improper printing uses these public photos to make cascading accordion books that, when moved between the hands, animate one full solar rotation.
This book variation developed after billy found the form of another celestial object’s orbit partially blocking one day’s solar photographs. When NASA responded to billy’s query that the mystery object was our moon, I offhandedly remarked that the hidden moon surface should be blind embossed within the silhouette. The next day billy showed up with his 20′ long prints.
