fluid horizons
billy ocallaghan and i had both been ruminating separately on the horizon. his studio is uniquely situated with a direct view of the ‘visible horizon,’ and is only 1 mile from the ocean and a ‘true horizon’ viewpoint. Over 3 days, we each took over a thousand photos and subsequently produced individual books with the same horizon-dimension. While we took photos side-by-side, each book combines different views, moments, ideas, and bindings.
‘fluid horizons’ is a visual meditation on the fluid experience of time, place, memory and recall. Twenty photographs are selected from hundreds, and are variably arranged so that the first selected image influences the selection of the next image. Transparent materials and an expandable concertina spine were used to interpret Henri Bergson’s idea of the “mobility of the mind,” which reflects on how we are able to arrange and experience fragments of memory simultaneously with in-the-moment perception.
